Minnesota experienced 694 drug overdose deaths in 2017. American Indians in Minnesota have the highest rate of drug overdose deaths in the United States. Opioid-related hospital treatment, including emergency department and inpatient hospital treatment, has doubled in Minnesota since 2005. As of June 2019, 90 agencies were participating in ODMAP. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and its partner agencies sought to use ODMAP data to identify overdose spikes, clusters, and patterns; share data; and develop collaborative communications. MDH established a robust, multifaceted prevention response that focused on Minnesotans vulnerable for overdose at multiple windows of opportunity. In addition, MDH pursued the creation of an API to connect ODMAP to the sundry statewide databases.
